The Greater Tokyo Area is the most populous metropolitan area in the world. The colors, signage, animate, crowds, food… I would describe Tokyo as lively, chaotic, and a bit overstimulating. Beyond the chaos, however, there’s something about Tokyo that is magical. As an introvert, I would recommend a few coffee (or sake) breaks a day when you reach your threshold; then go out again and plunge yourself into the chaos.
Despite the rain and close quarters we had fun exploring the Tsukiji Fish Market.
Fish market eats below: soba noodles w/ octopus, squid, and shrimp tempura
With the rain continuing to pour the Samurai museum in Shinjuku was a fun escape. We learned some Japanese history and saw many different period pieces. At the end of the tour we were allowed to put on a samurai helmet (Kabuto) replica and dress up in kimonos.
We finished off our time in Tokyo with a trip to the Robot Restaurant. I can honestly say I’ve never been to anything like it. We saved money by buying our tickets on Voyagin.
Below: Our last meal in Japan was at Gyukatsu Aona Seibu Shinjuku Ekimae
There is an underlying aesthetic to all things in Japan. From the vibrant traditional kimonos, to the intricacies of the tea ceremony, it was truly a new experience to be immersed in a culture where there is beauty found and strived for in all things. Finding ourselves lost or confused on a daily basis we constantly were surprised by people’s kindness. The amount of time and patience we repeatedly experienced was humbling. Japan truly won me over and I can’t wait to visit again!
Other restaurant recommendations:
Viva Goa Indian Cafe (If you’re craving Indian food)
Clinton St. Baking Company (American food)
Other recommendations:
Transit: Look into getting a Suica or IC card. It’s a reloadable card that can be used on transit systems, taxis, and even some stores accept the card. Credit cards are not accepted everywhere so it’s a great card to have around.
If you’ll be traveling long distances I might also recommend a JR pass (national) or they have some regional passes as well.
Do consider getting a pocket-wifi. Access to google maps or trip advisor is a game changer.
